Product Review: Dr. Scholl's® For Her High Heel Insoles

Happy Monday!  Today I'm reviewing Dr. Scholl's® For Her High Heel Insoles.  As you may or may not know, I'm a professional and I work in a professional setting full-time.  That means I have to dress nice for work and that includes wearing heels.  I was excited to try this product because believe it or not, I have never used any kind of insole for my shoes.

What They Say:  Guaranteed to provide all-day comfort, or your money back, Dr. Scholl's® For Her High Heel Insoles help prevent foot aches and pain caused by wearing high heels two inches and higher.

  • Unique design is clinically proven to help prevent high heel pain
  • Ultra-soft FabuSTEP® Gel Arch shifts pressure off ball of foot
  • Immediate and long lasting comfort guaranteed, or your money back
  • Practically invisible, even in strappy heels
  • Slim design won't make shoes feel tight
  • Insoles stay firmly in place, and are easily removable without damaging shoes
  • Made to fit women's sizes 6–10, including all open-style shoes
My Impression:  When I opened the package (which was a little bit of a pain to open) this is what I found inside.  These are made out of a gel-like material that is easily flexible.

They also have a sticky part that helps the insole adhere to your shoes.

I don't usually have a problem with heels hurting my feet or back anyway.  I'm not sure if it is because I have been wearing them for so many years or what.  So, I couldn't really test the claim that they help to relieve foot pain.  They did feel good on my feet though.  The insoles did stay firmly in place and were easily removable.  For me, this was a take it or leave it product.  I think if I was someone who suffered from foot pain I think these would help.  If you are interested in this product you can read more at drscholls.com.

Product Review: Filippo Berio Olive Oil

So when you think Ollive Oil the first thing that comes to mind is the Mediterranean right? Well it should because it's a staple in Mediterranean diet. It's used to season dishes while cooking as well as dressings, and even to dip bread in. So what's the deal with olive oil other than keeping your pasta from sticking together? Let me tell you I didn't really know either until I really looked into it. Honestly I wasn't that big on olive oil until my wife intorduced it into our cooking. After looking into it there is a HUGE reason to use more olive oil in your everyday diet and a lot less butter!

The health benefits alone are worth switching from butter and margerine to Olive Oil. It’s naturally free of cholesterol, trans fat, salt, sugar, and gluten. It is rich in monounsaturated fat which is a good fat. So it helps protect against heart disease, aids in digestion, and has been known to promote healthy aging. Here in the US nearly 13 million people have heart disease and more than a half-million people will die from it each year. That's just here in the US! People who live in the Mediterranean region in countries like Italy and Greece have the lowest rates of heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease, and have the highest adult life expectancies. Now this isn't only because of Olive Oil, however Olive Oil is a big part of their diet. The “Mediterranean Diet,” combines fruits, leafy greens, legumes, whole grains, olive oil and fish, with only small amounts of red meat and wine in moderation. What to see what the diet consists of? Of course you do! Here's their food pyramid:

So after reading and looking more into the benefits to switching to Olive Oil and substituting it over butter and magarine, I'm convinced it's the way to go. Here's something for you to use in your kitchen. It's a substitution chart:

Now there's a lot of different Olive Oils out there and honestly the ones we have used in the past which was a good deal of store brands they all seemed the same to me. I really liked the Filippo Berio Olive Oil we tried. It really had a nice light flavor and when we used it in cooking it didn't fail. It did well in all of our dishes. We even used a drop here and there just to season our pans so our eggs and food didn't stick. We also made grilled cheese sandwhiches for our son without buttering the bread. Just added a small drop in the pan and the grilled cheese came out great.
Filippo Berio also has a bunch of great recipes and you can find them on their site http://filippoberio.com/ourrecipes

So after trying this product I would not only highly recommend Filippo Berio Olive Oils, but please join us in switching to a healthier way of eating. I know everyone loves the Paula Dean recipe and foods with a to of butter but you can still make them using the chart above and using Olive Oil instead.

Product Review: Science Diet® Ideal Balance™ Grain Free

So all you pet owners out there more than likely feel the same way we do about your pets. I'm sure you too treat them as if they were part of the family and even spoil them like the were your kids. So you look after them and make sure they eat right.
We have been feeding our girls Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula dry food and our cats are extremely picky about what they eat so there is no straying away from what we feed them. Trust me we've tried and they sniff the impostor food and look up at us as if to say "you thought we'd like this? Then you eat it!" Then as if in protest turn and leave the kitchen. So when the opportunity came up for us to review a new cat food I thought to myself "well I know how this is going to end". We received the new bag of food and decided right off the bat to try something. I got two bowls that were exactly the same and placed them side by side. In one I placed their old dry food that they have always ate. In the second bowl I placed the new Science Diet® dry food and left them to see who ate what and how much. My first observation was kind of surprising in that Sarah our younger cat went right over to the Science Diet® bowl and started eating. She went back a few more times and chose the Science Diet® over the Purina food. Now Hannah our older cat is much more picky on what she eats and she has gone to the old reliable food. I did remove the Purina food and she ate the Science Diet® food. So it seems as though she will eat it but if given the choice between the two she would choose the food she's used to.
Now in doing some research I did come across some things that should have been obvious from the start. First of all looking at the ingredients the Purina Cat Chow contains corn meal, corn gluten and soy. Whereas the Science Diet® food does not contain any grain at all. What's the big deal? Well cats are carnivores, and as funny as I think it would be you don't see them sitting in a corn field chowing down on an ear of corn. So should their diet really contain things they typically wouldn't eat if they were out on their own? The grain and corn meal can cause health issues such as urinary tract problems and weight issues. Now not all grains are bad for cats though. Grains such as oats, barley and brown rice, contain beneficial nutrients and they are useful to the production of kibble. These healthy grains help “hold” dry food together and supply nutrients.
So with everything I'm going to give you the positives I find as well as the downsides. So I told you above what I liked about the product and the reasons why I am seriously considering switching to the Science Diet® food but what may hold me back? Well there are two things that may and they are cost and availability. The cost is higher than what we're paying now. Now we get a 3.5lb bag for $4.50, and for a 2lb bag of the Science Diet® food your looking at $12.49. Kind of a big difference. As I look for a place to purchase this food I am limited to some veterinarian offices and Pet Smart. I wouldn't mind going to Pet Smart but a lot of times it's out of the way. It would be nice to purchase this at a grocery or retail store like a Walmart or Target. The more I look into a grain free diet the more I'm sold as we would do whatever to keep them healthy. They seem to like it though so so far they are sold.
